Roxy’s signature look…tongue hanging out.

There’s a bit of sadness around the office today.  One of our regular visiting bulldogs, and beloved furry friend Roxy, has passed away peacefully.

Roxy was a sweet girl who had a tough start at life.  Having been used for breeding for the first several years of her life, she was surrender to the Timmins Humane Society in pretty rough shape.   Not only was she severely overweight and could barely stand, she had allergies, a skin condition and most of her teeth had rotted away.

Roxy was brought to the Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Centre (PEAC), and the moment Alison saw her, it was love at first sight.  Alison knew there would be medical bills and regular health concerns that would need to be addressed with Roxy, but that didn’t stop her from loving Roxy unconditionally and giving her a second chance at life.

Roxy lived the remainder of her days a happy and carefree bulldog, loved by many.  She was a bit of a local celebrity as well, representing the Ontario SPCA on many talk shows, interviews and photo shoots.  Nobody could resist that beautiful wrinkly face.

It was always a better day in the office when Roxy came in, with her grunts and groans and continuous rounds going from desk to desk for treats.   She could clear a room with her gas, but regardless, we all loved her.

The office won’t be the same without you Roxy.   You will be missed but forever in our hearts.

Happy Halloween!

Does your dog adore the occasional home-baked dog treat? Give this Halloween dog cookie recipe a try!

Give your dog a special treat this Halloween!

(Note: if your dog has any dietary concerns or restrictions, talk to your vet before feeding your pet any treats outside of his or her normal pet food.)

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 ¼ cup white flour
  • 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons bran
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast

Mix all the ingredients together in a bread maker, or knead until a firm dough is formed. Cut the dough into smaller piles, and then use the cookie cutter of your choice to shape the dough. Once you have the cookies into the shape or style you like, place them on a greased sheet and bake at 300*f for approximately one hour. Once the cookies are baked, allow them to cool overnight so they are crisp before feeding them to your dog.

Happy baking!

We all know what a fun time of year Halloween can be, for pets and people alike! Dressing your furry friend in an adorable costume or making spooky and delicious pet goodies (hey, why should the kids get all the tasty treats?) is part of the fun. While we want everyone to have a great time, heads up pet parents! We want to give you some reminders on pet safety to make sure your pet has fun and safe evening too.

Remember, not all pets like being dressed up!

While many people may enjoy sharing dinner scraps with their pet, Halloween is especially not a good time to share. Whether it’s candy, gum or chocolate, there are NO safe Halloween candies for pets. In addition to upsetting your pet’s stomach that could cause diarrhea or vomiting, large quantities can be fatal. Even small quantities (as small as one bite) could get lodged in your pet’s esophagus, causing choking and trouble breathing. Grab your pet’s favourite treat from the pet store, or make some unique treats that are safe for your pet instead. Better safe than sorry!

Does your pet love visitors? Then Halloween must drive them up the wall with excitement. The doorbell is ringing and the doorway is filled with kids as monsters, superheroes and princesses. Time for your pet to investigate? Nope! Even the most well-behaved dog or cat can be overly excited by the doorway activity, particularly when the visitors look especially unusual.  Many pets can get confused or upset with all the activity, especially pets who feel protective of their house or pet parent. To avoid pets scooting out the door or getting nervous, keep them in a quieter part of the house with their favourite bed, toys and water.

As you browse the aisles at your local pet store or shop online for this year’s latest and greatest pet costume, remember that like people, some pets do or don’t like dressing up. If your pet bites at their costume, has trouble breathing or struggles to get out of it, skipping the costume is a better idea. Pets can panic and cause injury to themselves or others. Never keep a costume on for extended periods of time, and be sure to frequently check that it fits correctly, doesn’t restrict breathing or movement and their ability to go to the bathroom.

Lastly, decorating the house to get into the spirit of Halloween is lots of fun but be aware of items that may be harmful to your pet. Pumpkin and pumpkin seeds can cause stomach upset if ingested, and if lit with a candle, be a fire hazard if your curious cat or inquisitive dog. Keep all electrical wires well out of reach as well as decorations and items that may be appealing to your pet.

Have a great Halloween, and if you have any fantastic or adorable Halloween pictures, come visit us on Facebook and share them on our wall. Happy Halloween everyone!

Halloween Safety Tips for your Pet

Happy Halloween!

There are few times of the year that excite kids more than the prospect of Halloween. Fun costumes, a night of trick or treating and the best part: CANDY! Pet owners also enjoy the opportunity to dress their pets up in cute or hilarious costumes.

While Halloween is full of fun, here are some tips to keep your pet safe on Halloween:

  • Never leave your pet unattended while in a costume. Even costumes designed for pets can be dangerous if they tighten or have loose parts that can be chewed off an ingested. Always remove the costume immediately after.
  • Keep your pet away from your front door during prime trick or treat hours. Repeated doorbell ringing or knocking may get your dog excited, and he or she may accidentally run out. Cats are also the masters of escaping, so be sure to keep them contained in another part of the house.
  • Always keep candy out of the reach of pets. Chocolate can be toxic to pets, so avoid keeping bowls of candy on the floor where it can be eaten by pets.
  • Beware of pumpkins! While they are the hallmark of Halloween, if your pet nibbles or chews on one it might upset their stomach.

At our house, I always put Jersey’s bed and a favourite bone in the kitchen with the doors closed. She is able to see me and the door, but it keeps her in a safe spot while I’m repeatedly opening and closing the door. I also tend to keep her indoors too where I can keep an eye on her.

Know your pet and know your neighbourhood. Enjoy your Halloween, and be sure to buy or make some pet-friendly treats so your furry friends can enjoy too.
